Wild Spanish mustangs have roamed these beaches for 500 years. The only way in is 4x4 — and a Bronco is the way to do it on your own schedule.

The herd — roughly 100 Banker horses, descendants of colonial Spanish mustangs — lives on the 11 miles of beach and dune between the end of the paved road in Corolla and the Virginia line. There are no roads, no fences, and no tour required: where the pavement ends at the Carova ramp, you shift into 4x4, drop onto the sand, and the beach is the highway.

The horses graze the dunes in the morning, wander the neighborhoods behind them midday, and often come down to the surf on hot afternoons. Renters regularly count 20–40 on a single drive. Go slow, look behind the dune lines, and give the beach houses a scan — they like the shade.
